Using Skill Points to Progress
To find the exact costs to buy each of these things, refer to either the Skill Cost Table or the Feats list. Here we will focus on a general description of the ways that a person can spend these points, what limitations there are, and what wise strategies for distribution are.
To begin with, most characters will likely focus on getting the skills which represent their character’s core playstyle to a rank that they will reliably roll successes. In this process, they will acquire perks from hitting rank 5 and rank 10 in the various skills. It may be helpful in this process and in those following, to have characters who have placed ranks into the skill Instruct, so that others can begin learning faster.Â
They will also likely begin prioritizing the purchase of professions. Once characters begin buying professions, the game tends to open up considerably, allowing the creation of improved equipment, skills that provide high utility, and new approaches to solving problems. As characters begin buying skills and professions to a considerable rank, they will need to keep raising their primary statistics so that they can raise the caps for those skills. In this process, they will begin increasing their health, delay, and other important core aspects of their character.
There is also the acquisition of improved sequence, which will allow characters to respond more quickly to combat situations. Sequence is expensive, but has significant benefits to characters that choose to sink the points.
At this stage, there are two likely paths that characters will take. One is to begin dumping skill points into favored skills, which can exceed 10, capping at 20. They do not need to increase their primary statistics any further to attain these further specialization ranks. The cost is simply very high. But even though this is cost prohibitive, it will allow characters to begin making tests at Difficult check with much more ease. However, other characters may prioritize the buying of feats at this stage in order to attain highly useful skills and augmentations to their playstyle. Feats can change a character who is performing admirably into a character that is legendary warrior or leader, able to stand toe to toe with the best that Nyra has to offer.
